A monthly billed or credit based calling card or phone card is exactly what the name implies. This is a phone card which is monthly billed. (Normally to your credit card.) When you make a call, the total cost of the call (which is often made up of several components) is accumulated and the current amount due on the card is increased by the cost of the call. At the end of each month you are billed for the total cost of calls made on that card.

Monthly billed phonecards are often run as part of the customer's regular phone service or their one plus long distance service and the cost of calls is simply added to your monthly phone bill. This option is often extremely expensive and is used predominantly for low volume calling and the sheer convenience of having a consolidated phone bill.
